Is London’s Favourite Child… Covered in Fur?

More cats and dogs than under-fives: What does that say about modern family life?

There are more cats and dogs in London than there are children under five – could this tail-wagging statistic signal a seismic shift in the capital’s family structure? The team behind London Pet Show Live certainly thinks so.

According to the Office for National Statistics, there are an estimated 1.2 million dogs living in London compared to just 1.1 million toddlers. Meanwhile, 44% of Londoners own a cat, well above the national average of 30% or less. It seems furry companions are becoming more central to city living than ever before.

To celebrate the capital’s growing devotion to four-legged family members, London Pet Show Live returns to Olympia on 20-21 September, promising a fun-packed, interactive weekend that’s equal parts educational and entertaining.

Hosting the Main Stage is ITV This Morning’s vet, Dr Scott Miller, who’ll be introducing talks and displays covering everything from behaviour and wellness to choosing the right pet for your lifestyle.

“It’s no surprise that Londoners are so passionate about pets,” says Dr Miller.

“Science proves how all animals – but particularly dogs and cats – lower our stress levels, make us smile more, and give us purpose and companionship. I’m excited to be hosting the main stage at London Pet Show Live to promote responsible ownership, from choosing the right pet to considering a rescue. Rehoming charities like Battersea and Dogs Trust are at bursting point.”

The show’s packed line-up also includes Channel 5’s “Dogfather” Graeme Hall, Animal Psychologist Dr Roger Mugford, Behaviourist Hannah Molloy, Holistic Vet Dr Nick Thompson, and more – all sharing their expertise in wellness, training, and the deep bond between humans and animals.

Families can meet over 40 of Britain’s most beloved dog and cat breeds, explore the Guinea Pig Village, and learn all about hamsters, rabbits, and even ‘super smart’ rats – ideal small pets for city flats.

Fancy something a little more exotic? From geckos to parrots, the show has you covered with expert advice on reptiles and birds too.

The Dog Activity Arena promises high-energy entertainment, with performances by stunt dogs, agility champions, and demonstrations from Medical Detection Dogs – the life-saving heroes of the canine world.

And for book lovers, the Literary Corner hosted by Paper Cat Books will feature celebrity signings, including Dr Scott Miller, Graeme Hall, and award-winning children’s author Jane Elson.

With face painting, retail therapy, and the chance to read alongside Pets as Therapy dogs, the dedicated Kids’ Zone offers families a gentle place to pause, learn, and bond.

Whether you’re a seasoned pet owner or just considering bringing one into your life, London Pet Show Live offers the perfect day out.
