Coming Soon: Petasure’s Early Detection Feature

A new AI-powered feature from Petasure aims to spot the subtle visual changes owners might miss – helping detect serious illness earlier and giving pets a better chance of treatment and recovery.

Catching illness early gives pets the very best chance of a positive outcome. The challenge, of course, is that our animals cannot tell us when something feels off. Subtle changes, a little weight loss, a shift in coat condition, a swelling that develops gradually, can easily go unnoticed until a pet is visibly unwell or in discomfort.

Even with regular hands-on checks, would you always spot those changes early enough?

This is where Petasure’s upcoming early detection feature comes in. Built on principles similar to those used in facial recognition technology, the system compares each new scan with previous ones, identifying small but meaningful changes over time. If a difference is detected, the owner is alerted and prompted to seek a veterinary check-up.

The model has been trained to recognise visual indicators associated with a range of serious conditions, including diabetes, cancers, kidney disease, heart disease, Lyme disease and parvovirus. In practical terms, that means signs such as weight loss, coat changes, visible lumps or swelling, cloudy eyes, swollen lymph nodes, lameness, joint swelling and dehydration markers including dry eyes or nose.

“Catching illness early gives pets the very best chance of a positive outcome.”

Some symptoms, particularly behavioural or internal changes such as reduced energy or increased drinking, remain outside the scope of visual detection, reinforcing that this is a powerful support tool, not a replacement for attentive ownership.

We are currently working towards a pilot with a leading insurer, and the projected impact is significant. With 100,000 dogs enrolled, the model estimates the potential to save 4,643 lives each year: 4,000 from heart disease, 633 from cancers and 10 from kidney disease. At 500,000 dogs, that rises to 23,215. At one million, 46,430. At three million, the potential reaches 139,290 lives saved annually.

Early detection not only saves lives, it reduces suffering. When conditions such as cancer are identified sooner, there are often more treatment options available, including surgery, with improved chances of success, remission and long-term survival. Identifying visible signs of joint issues, infection or systemic illness early can also prevent chronic pain and significantly improve a pet’s quality of life.

This is not about replacing the bond between owner and pet, it is about strengthening it, giving owners an additional layer of insight when it matters most.

This is the future of preventative pet care, and it is closer than we think.
