London’s Best Dog-friendly Swimming Spots

Dogs in London pond

As every dog-lover knows, nothing beats the sight of a tail-thumping pup leaping into cool water after a long walk. Whether your dog loves a splash through urban fountains or likes to take a nose-dive off the sandy banks of a full-on swimming hole, London’s got water-lovin’ spaces aplenty for them to enjoy.

We’ve done the hard work for you, and sniffed out the city’s top spots to splash, dip, and shake it all over post-swim. Or take a hop, skip and a jump from the capital to one of the nation’s favourite dog-friendly cities nearby. Read on to find out more!

Hampstead Heath – The Legendary Dog Pond

Nothing quite beats watching pups cannonball into the Heath’s sandy-shored dog pond. This iconic canine paradise frequented by the likes of Harry Styles and Benedict Cumberbatch is perfect for off-leash socialising and fetching antics in a greenwood setting. Just remember to rinse your dog pre and post-dip since pesticide build-up from flea treatments has been flagged. Go light on chemicals to keep the local wildlife happy.

For a post-swim pitstop, head to Stylish café WatchHouse which offers an all‑day brunch, outdoor seating and water bowls for pups, friendly local bakehouse Ginger & White, where dogs are welcomed inside with treats and there is artisan coffee on tap, or wander to Romeo & Juliet’s, who offer a full dog‑menu, from puppa‑ccinos to poached‑salmon delights – ideal for a canine celebration after a splash.

Granary Square Fountains – King’s Cross Urban Oasis

Amid the chic revitalisation of King’s Cross, Granary Square’s bubbling fountains are a summer playground for water-mad pups. With jets dancing up from the piazza and space to chase reflections, it’s a fab city dip. Suitable for water-lovers of all shapes and sass and owners love the laid-back vibe and ‘pawsome’ local cafés.

Check out The Lighterman, a waterside pub with terraces and towpath views, serving seasonal dishes, doggy treats, and water bowls for four-legged pals or the Coal Drops Yard, an ambient food-hall just steps from the fountains, full of relaxed spots with outdoor tables and dog-friendly zones. Whilst the popular local Dishoom outpost is off-limits to dogs indoors, there’s ample dog-friendly outdoor seating nearby – ideal for a chai and bacon naan roll post-dip.

Springfield Park – Clapton’s Paddling Paradise

Tucked away in leafy Clapton, Springfield Park offers a gentle water gradient perfect for nervous pups or water-curious beginners. With willow-fringed edges, flat lawns, and wildflower meadow buzz, it’s an idyllic escape without leaving London. Plus, the park tends to stay calm even at peak sunny hours.

Springfield Park Café is a relaxed coffee spot near the park entrance with outdoor seating and occasional dog treats and, as the name suggests, nearby Riverside Café is in a peaceful spot along the river and offers old school breakfast offerings not to be sniffed at. Or head into Clapton proper to sample the brunch offerings along the high street like the highly rated Stone Bros where well-behaved dogs are welcomed.

Battersea Park Thames Banks – Perfect For A Paddle

Not every dip needs to be in a pool – a case in point being the Battersea Park gravel beds.

A secret gem along the Thames, dog-friendly Battersea Park offers calm water access after a romp through its lawns and woodland trails. Less a formal pond, just natural low-entry river edges on the Thames perfect for a stray splash or stick chase.

The vibrant redevelopment of Battersea Power Station is a real hub for dog-friendly spots from the Arcade Food Hall & Bar and Battersea Brewery to Where The Pancakes Are and Wright Brothers – where dogs even have their own menu and mocktails.

Ruislip Lido – Doggy Beach Retreat

Just beyond Zone 6, the 60-acre Ruislip Lido in West London gives pups a proper beach day. Sandy shores meet reservoir water, perfect for a full-on swim and stick chasing, muddy grin-making good time. Do check for algae warnings mid-summer though; lifeguards report occasional blooms, and they are a no-go zone for your pooch.

For some refreshment post-dip, head to the Lakeside Café for hot drinks and ice creams and outdoor tables where dogs can join the fun. The Middlesex Arms and The White Bear in nearby  Ruislip Manor are both very welcoming to dogs, as are Granero Lounge and Esquires Coffee.

Hollow Pond, Epping Forest – An East-London Escape

Hollow Pond in Enfield is a serene oasis beyond the city centre bustle. With shaded coves, a wooden jetty, and calm waters, it’s a dreamy swim spot for mellow jaunts or relaxed afternoons on the shore. Ducks, dragonflies, and native wildlife make it a peaceful backdrop to your pup’s paddle, and they can dive, swim, and re-emerge like a salty sea dog.

Nearby pub The Lord Palmerston provides a warm welcome to canine companions, or head further into Epping Forest to the charming Larder at Butlers Retreat and the popular Forest Gate Inn.

Morden Hall Park – Wandle River Paddling

South of the Thames, the charming National Trust property Morden Hall Park offers the shallow loops of the River Wandle winding through tranquil wetlands, perfect for water-curious pups and cautious swimmers. The park’s vast lawns and herb gardens mean you can stroll, splash and chill in one spot – and it’s pleasantly peaceful even on sunny weekends. Mind the current, though – strong swimmers only beyond a certain stretch.

The charming onsite Potting Shed Café is dog-friendly and the adjacent garden centre provides lots of tasty treats and toys for your four-legged friend. Dogs are also welcome inside and out at the Stableyard Café which also offers doggie treats.

Verulamium Park, St Albans – A Tranquil Escape

If you fancy venturing slightly further afield to cool off, then St Albans in Hertfordshire should be your next port of call. Less than 20 minutes by train from central London and named the second most dog-friendly city in the UK in 2025 (after Southampton), the impressive, 100 acre Verulamium Park is home to a lake where dogs are welcome to swim and cool off in designated areas and owners can enjoy delving into the history of the Roman city on which it stands.

You can enjoy a post dip bite to eat at a whole host of dog-friendly eateries such as the charming Inn on the Park, Cathedral adjacent George Street Canteen and popular pub Saint & Sinner. As you’d expect for one of the nation’s favourite dog-friendly spots, there are also numerous pet groomers for that post swim blow dry, and highly rated vets who will keep your beloved fur baby in tip top condition.

Water-Wise Tips for Dogs & Owners

  1. Check water quality before your dip: Avoid swimming after heavy rain or if you spot algae.
  2. Stay parasite smart: Rinse and towel-dry your pup afterward and avoid unsafe flea-tick chemicals pre-swim to protect local wildlife.
  3. Be duck and wildlife-aware: Keep control of your dog near local flora and fauna.
  4. Pack essentials: Water bowl, towel, treats, and a rollback lead. Floating balls and dog toys are also a must!

London’s dog-friendly waterways might surprise you with their diversity – from city fountains to forest lakes and reservoir beaches, it’s a canine aquatic adventure for every pup. Happy paddling, London dog-lovers!
