Many Tears Appeals For Funds To Fix ‘Broken Hearts’

An animal rescue centre that takes in former breeding dogs is appealing for donations to help save the lives of puppies like Fizz and Roldeer (pictured.)

Fizz (also known as Charlie) and Roldeer (nicknamed Rolo by his foster carer) are two beautiful pups who were handed in to Many Tears, a South Wales based animal rescue centre by their breeder.

Fizz, aged nine weeks, and Roldeer, aged 18 weeks, suffer from Pulmonary Valve Stenosis, which leads to a heart murmur, and each need an urgent operation to save their lives. Both are currently on beta blockers to slow their heart rates before their operations, provisionally scheduled for late October and early November.

The surgical procedure known as a valvuloplasty can stretch the pulmonary valve’s walls, enlarging it to improve blood flow. This treatment option involves inserting a catheter that has a balloon on the end that can inflate and stretch the heart’s walls.

Although many dogs are affected by heart murmurs caused by Mitral Valve Disease (MVD), they overwhelmingly affect Cavalier King Charles Spaniels. According to the latest figures, around 50% of Cavaliers have a heart murmur aged five and above, whilst 80% suffer from MVD aged eight and above.

Wiltshire-based foster carer Carol Reeves explained: “Both dogs are having operations to correct their severe heart murmurs in the next two months. Without the operations the dogs’ lives would be extremely limited, making them unlikely to live to one year old.”

Each pup’s operation is being carried out at Langford Veterinary Services Small Animal Referral Hospital and costs around £2000.

Rolo and Charlie are now available for adoption from Many Tears and the rescue centre is urging anyone interested in adopting them to help with the cost of the operation.

Carol said: “Rolo and Charlie both have wonderful personalities.  Rolo is a really sweet boy and Charlie acts like there is nothing wrong and runs and plays with our other Cavs. Both have learnt to walk on a lead and sleep soundly all night in their crate. They travel well and are 90% house trained.  They are both a real joy.”

Sylvia Van Atta of Many Tears said: “This year we have already saved two pups with broken hearts and as well as Charlie and Rolo we also have a Collie pup called Skinny who is waiting for heart surgery and a Bichon pup who has just arrived who may also need help.

“We cannot do this without donations and we are so grateful for the help we have received so far, but still need additional funds to help cover the cost of these operations.

“If you would like to help these pups and others like them by making a donation we would be truly grateful.   Please help if you can.”
