Editor’s Letter: May 2026
Welcome to May’s edition of Pets Magazine – a month of longer days, lighter evenings, and more time spent outdoors with our animals.
This issue brings together a mix of the thoughtful, the reassuring, and the quietly uplifting moments that shape life with pets.
Our much-loved Paws & Predictions (p.4) returns with a light-hearted look at what May’s stars may hold for your pet.
On p.8, we speak with Peter Egan about animal welfare, including the improving situation for Egypt’s kiln donkeys. It’s a piece that reflects both the challenges still faced by animals around the world and the steady progress that can be made through sustained effort and care.
Carole Malone returns on p.14 with Murphy & Me, sharing her warm and gently humorous take on life with Murphy, her Tibetan Terrier – full of those small, familiar moments so many of us recognise.
Our new countryside column, Field Notes (p.17), continues to find its voice as a space for wildlife, walks, rural life, and a strong bias towards countryside canines. This month, we head to Cheshire with a camera. Field Notes is kindly sponsored by Ordnance Survey.
And for our feline readers, Katie Gwilt returns on p.22 with The Cat’s Whiskers, exploring how to keep outdoor cats entertained and content indoors.
Taken together, this month’s issue reflects the many sides of living with animals – the companionship, the responsibility, and the quiet ways they shape our days.
Wishing you and your pets a gentle and uplifting May.
