The 12 Strays of Christmas: Meet the adorable dogs dreaming of a forever home

Meet the adorable dogs dreaming of a forever home in the new year

As tinsel twinkles and mince pies bake, thousands of dogs across the UK are spending Christmas in kennels, quietly waiting for the greatest gift of all – a place to call home.

From pom-pom-sized Pomeranians to zoomy lurchers and wise old terriers, these are the 12 Strays of Christmas – each with a wagging tail, a hopeful heart, and a story waiting for a new chapter.

Every featured shelter is part of Pet Remedy’s trusted national rescue map, a handy guide for anyone looking to adopt from ethical, welfare-first centres across the country.

Animal behaviour consultant Andrew Hale, from Pet Remedy, says the festive season is the perfect time to reflect on what dogs really need – not just during the holidays, but for life.

“Adopting a dog is one of the most rewarding things you can do, but it’s also a responsibility,” he says. “Their emotional wellbeing must come first. A new home, new routines and new people can feel overwhelming, so patience, empathy and understanding are key. When we prioritise how a dog feels, everything else falls into place. We put emotional wellbeing at the heart of all the resources that we give to our rescue partners.”

Pet Remedy created its UK-wide shelter map to guide future adopters towards reputable rescues that go the extra mile.

“We set up the map to make it easier for people to find shelters that put welfare at the heart of everything,” says Andrew. “Every dog deserves safety, compassion and a chance to thrive, and we want adopters to feel confident they’re supporting organisations with the highest standards.”

And his festive reminder?

“Dogs don’t arrive knowing our routines or expectations. Give them time, create safe spaces, and go at their pace. Building trust is the greatest gift you can give.”

So, grab a blanket, pop the kettle on, and meet the 12 wonderful dogs hoping that 2026 will be the year their wish comes true…

1. Hallie, 4 – Cheltenham Animal Shelter

This gentle ex-racer is the queen of the greyhound lean! Hallie loves food, fuss, and cosy company. She’s happiest with someone home most of the time and could live with older children or a fellow sighthound – but no cats, please. Calm, cuddly and ready for retirement.

2. Oz, 3 – Cheltenham Animal Shelter

Clever, bouncy and full of love, Oz is a whirlwind of charm. He’s completed an IMDT course and thrives on fun, structure and a garden to burn off energy. Best suited to an adult-only home, he’ll be your shadow once he trusts you. A top-notch buddy in the making.

3. Ivy, 4 – Cheltenham Animal Shelter

A snuggle-loving lurcher with a heart as big as her jump! Ivy’s a social butterfly who could live with another sighthound or kids 10+. She finds alone time tricky, so a home with company and a secure garden is a must. No cats, but lots of cuddles, please.

4. Lady, 14 – National Animal Welfare Trust

This sweet Jack Russell cross is all about the quiet life. Lady enjoys gentle strolls and sofa snuggles, and charms everyone with her little “morning tap dance”. She’d love a calm retirement with a kind soul who’ll treasure her twilight years.

5. Mowgli, almost 2 – Cheltenham Animal Shelter

Full of beans and bursting with brains, this cheeky terrier is looking for an experienced home with space to play and learn. Tug games, cheese, and peaceful walks are top of his wish list. A work in progress – but what a joy he’ll be.

6. Luna, 5 – National Animal Welfare Trust

Tiny but mighty! Luna the Chihuahua cross can be overwhelmed by the world but shines once she bonds with you. She needs a confident, adult-only home where she can be your one and only. Quirky, loyal and ready to shine.

7. Rolo, 1 – Cheltenham Animal Shelter

This young lurcher is all about squeaky toys, zoomies and snuggles. He’s a bit bouncy, so would suit kids 10+ and needs to be your only pet – but he’s good with dogs out and about. Bright, happy and ready to steal your heart.

8. Dexter, 4 – Cheltenham Animal Shelter

Big love, big bounce, big heart. Dexter the Staffy cross is all about belly rubs and learning new tricks. He’s strong on the lead and needs a pet-free home with teens 16+. With patience and company, he’ll reward you tenfold.

9. Daizy, 4 – Animals in Distress

A delicate little Pomeranian with a heart full of hope. Daizy is sensitive and best suited to a calm home with older teens. She can’t be left alone for long but is making beautiful progress every day. A pocket-sized companion in waiting.

10. Bonnie, 3 – Animals in Distress

Part Springer, part Labrador, and all personality! Bonnie is goofy, affectionate, and full of energy. She needs a pet-free, adult-only home and someone happy to help with training. She’ll repay you with laughter and love.

11. Marley, 3 – Cheltenham Animal Shelter

Marley the Cocker Spaniel does the best full-body wiggle you’ve ever seen. He’s sweet, playful and ready for a secure garden and a home with older kids who’ll help build his confidence. Bonus points if you love a zoomie.

12. Otis, 5 – Animals in Distress

Otis is a gentle Labrador cross who’s come a long way. He needs an experienced home that’ll cherish his sensitive nature and support his hip-friendly exercise needs. In return, you’ll get quiet loyalty, deep trust, and a friend for life.
