Why More Dogs Are Struggling to Maintain Condition – And What Owners Can Do

A growing number of dog owners and professionals are turning their attention to an often-overlooked issue in canine health: maintaining healthy weight and muscle condition.

While obesity has long dominated the conversation, there is increasing awareness around the challenges of unintentional weight loss, reduced muscle mass and inconsistent appetite, particularly in senior dogs, those recovering from illness, and highly active or working breeds.

In response to this shift towards more preventative, balanced approaches to canine nutrition, UK-based natural dog brand Ace Antlers has introduced a new supplement, Muzzle Mass, designed to support healthy body condition and muscle maintenance, especially for working dogs.

Formulated using four natural ingredients – coconut powder, venison powder, antler powder and carrot powder – the product contains no artificial additives, preservatives or fillers, reflecting continued demand for simple, transparent formulations in pet nutrition.

Rather than promoting rapid weight gain, the supplement is intended to support gradual improvements in condition, helping dogs maintain a healthy balance of weight and muscle over time. This approach is particularly relevant for older dogs, those with reduced appetite, or animals recovering from periods of illness where maintaining condition can be more challenging.

A spokesperson for Ace Antlers said the product was developed in response to changing attitudes around canine health: “It’s no longer just about addressing problems after they appear – owners are increasingly focused on maintaining condition and supporting their dog’s body throughout life. Weight gain should be gradual and as natural as possible.”

The supplement is supplied in powder form and can be mixed into a dog’s existing diet, allowing owners to adjust feeding to suit individual needs.

As awareness grows around healthy ageing and condition management in dogs, functional supplements such as these are becoming a more visible part of the wider pet care landscape.

Owners concerned about weight loss or changes in condition are advised to seek veterinary guidance before introducing new supplements.
