I’m a Dog Expert: Eleven Adorable Signs Your Dog Loves You

Dog surrounded by hearts

Dogs have long been known as humankind’s best friends, and science is now backing up what dog lovers have always known in their hearts. The bond between dogs and their owners is not just emotional, it is biological.

Studies show that dogs experience increased heart rate and oxytocin levels, often called the love hormone, when interacting with their owners. In fact, research by Canine Cottages found that a dog’s heart rate increases by 46.2 percent when being told “I love you”.

With Valentine’s Day approaching, Dr Emma Scales-Theobald, Canine Behaviourist and resident dog expert at Canine Cottages, shares the subtle and not so subtle ways dogs show affection, from meaningful tail wags to full body cuddles.

Eleven signs your dog loves you

They want to be stroked
Dogs who adore you actively seek physical affection. Stroking triggers the release of oxytocin in both you and your dog, strengthening your bond. Some dogs love a scratch behind the ears, others prefer a gentle chest rub. Soft eyes, relaxed posture and wagging tails all signal enjoyment.

They nudge you
If you stop petting and suddenly feel a nose pushing your arm or hand, your dog is asking for more. Nudging is their polite or sometimes persistent way of saying “please continue”. Responding positively reassures them that their affection is returned.

They sit on or near you
Dogs are social animals and closeness equals trust. Some dogs want to be right on your lap, others prefer to sit quietly beside you. Either way, choosing your company shows comfort, connection and affection.

They lean into you
A dog leaning their weight against you is seeking closeness and security. Sitting on your feet is another common version of this behaviour and can be both affectionate and slightly possessive, a gentle claim that you are their person.

They show you their belly
When a dog rolls onto their back and exposes their belly, it usually signals trust and affection. A relaxed body and wagging tail often mean they are asking for a belly rub. If their body is tense or ears are pinned back, however, this may be submission or anxiety rather than a request for affection. Always read the full body language.

They follow you everywhere
Dogs that trail you from room to room simply want to be near you. Often nicknamed Velcro dogs, this behaviour is common in loyal breeds and reflects strong attachment. In their world, together is best.

They bring you their toys
Sharing a favourite toy is a big deal in dog terms. It shows trust and generosity, particularly in retriever breeds. When your dog presents a toy, they are inviting connection, not just play.

They ask you to play
The classic play bow, front legs down, bottom in the air and tail wagging, is a universal invitation. It is a joyful expression of excitement and affection. Saying yes strengthens your bond and keeps your dog mentally and physically happy.

They jump up to greet you
Jumping is a natural way dogs greet those they love, bringing them closer to your face. While it is an affectionate behaviour, it can be unsafe, especially with large dogs or small children. Teaching calm greetings allows affection to be shown more safely.

They sleep on or near you
Sleep is when dogs are most vulnerable. Choosing to rest close to you shows deep trust and comfort. Whether they curl up beside you or snooze just out of reach, proximity during rest is a strong sign of love.

They lick you
Licking can be an expression of affection and releases feel-good hormones that help dogs feel calm and happy. However, excessive licking may signal anxiety or pain. Context matters. Anxious licking is often paired with tense posture, ears held back and wide eyes.

Dr Emma Scales-Theobald emphasises the importance of understanding context and body language.

“Understanding your dog’s behaviour can deepen your bond and help you respond to their emotional needs,” she says. “Knowing the difference between affection and stress signals ensures you’re tuned into their well-being.”
